Writing:
We are gearing up for very successful STAR testing week on May 6-10. Students have been practicing language mechanics, editing, inference, figurative language, and narrative writing. Students have begun writing daily logs of their gold mining adventures, and will be practicing all the above in the detailed journal entries.
Reading:
Students continue to read By the Great Horn Spoon! by Sid Fleischman. Thank you to Ms. McIntosh for coming in to read with us this week!
Math:
Students are learning about customary units of length and weight this week. We have also been reviewing the year’s skills to date during our test prep time.
Social Studies:
GOLD! Eureka! Students have begun a simulation on the California Gold Rush. Your child formed a mining ‘team’ and will make decisions, encounter hardships, and enjoy the fruits of the team’s labor together as they make their way to Golden Gulch to strike it rich. Ask your child about the game!
Science: Students have begun a unit on magnetism and electricity with Ms. Cala. This week, students have learned about the iron and magnet relationship, and the properties of magnets.
Dr. Gold’s “Touch Program”: On 5/3 and 5/10, Dr. Gold will present valuable information to our class. He will discuss good, bad, and confusing touch, “criteria” for appropriate touching and how to identify unsafe situations. He will also discuss children’s rights, the meaning and types of abuse, and strategies for getting out of abusive situations. We encourage you to ask your child about the sessions and to discuss the material with your child at home.
Miscellaneous:
Spanish Feast! THANK YOU to the Lowry and Wheat families for making delicious paella for our class. Muy deliciosio!
*PLEASE return all gold country forms by next Wednesday, May 1st.
*Congratulations to our Science Wizards who entered the science fair and taught the school all about water molecules, turning on/off and circuit to produce light, and dry ice: Miles, Jack and Adrian!
