About C.A.T.S. Country
What is C.A.T.S. Country? C.A.T.S. (CONFIDENT, ATTENTIVE, THOUGHTFUL, STUDENTS) is the class theme. These values are ones that I intend to nourish throughout the year to help give our students a healthy head start for middle school.
5th Grade Homework Policies
5th Grade Homework Policies
Homework is assigned on a nightly basis and should be done independently. However, parents are welcome to help if a child is struggling at home. District policy states that 5th graders should spend an average of 60 minutes a night on homework, including 20-30 minutes of nightly reading. PLEASE let me know if your child is spending more than 60 minutes a night on homework or is struggling with any particular concept.
Students receive nightly homework to practice and reinforce concepts learned in class. It is expected that students complete:
Any homework assignments left at home or not fully completed will be done during first recess. Homework is important in developing discipline and responsibility. Both class work and homework are expected to be neat, complete, and on time. Any unfinished class work will be sent home to be completed. Absent work does not apply to this policy. Students who are absent are responsible for getting any missed work from me and must complete it in a reasonable amount of time.
The Homework Tab on the class webpage will direct you to the daily homework.

C.A.T.S. Currency
I operate a money-management system using “C.A.T.S.” currency. Students earn C.A.T.S. cash for assignments completed, salaries for classroom jobs, and fulfillment of responsibilities. Students are fined C.A.T.S. cash for missing assignments or violating rules. Students are given the opportunity each month to spend their earnings at our class auction.
School Rules
Rewards and Consequences
Students are expected to follow the Bel Aire School rules at all times. Please review the school’s Student Handbook for more information.
Rewards
Students give, or are given, positive affirmations when they make good choices, show appropriate behavior, or go out of their way to follow the MOSAIC Values. Affirmations may be “Caught Being Good” slips, Bel Aire paw, or other forms of classroom recognition. Students’ intrinsic motivation is developed and encouraged.
Consequences
Consequences for inappropriate behavior or choices depend on the severity of the incident and are as follows:
Minor offenses (ex: disrupting classroom activities or off-task): Student is given a verbal warning. If the behavior continues, the student is given a warning (Behavior Management Form.) If the behavior still continues, the student receives a STOP (level 2 on the Behavior Management Form) and a parent is notified.
Major offenses (ex: teasing, bullying, or any other malicious, intentionally harmful or dangerous activity): immediate CITATION (Level 3 on the Behavior Management Form) and parent notification.
NOTE: The third STOP in one trimester equals a CITATION. All CITATIONS will result in a loss of privileges, including, but not limited to multiple lunch recesses, field trips, school assemblies, and classroom parties. The teacher and/or principal determine each privilege. Please carefully review the school’s handbook.

Want to be a Classroom Volunteer?
Parent involvement is essential to the success of your student. I welcome volunteers to work with students, supervise monthly math games, help prepare instructional materials, class project assistance—the sky’s the limit! I also appreciate your expertise (professions and hobbies) and contacts for guest speakers, field trips, media materials, and the like.
