This is a Grade Level Newsletter:
Maker Faire 2.0 Update
The Maker Faire will now be held from 5:00 - 7:00pm. Kids can begin set up at 4:30pm.
Writing
This month, students are:
· Finishing part one of an expository research writing unit.
· Students will conclude the unit by writing a short research essay, due on Oct. 10th.
· On Oct. 13th, students will begin a narrative writing unit called, “NaNoWriMo” (National Novel Writing Month), which was created by the Young Writers Project.
· Students will examine the pre-writing and planning stages of writing a novel - something they will furiously begin and finish in November!
Math
This month we are completing Unit 1, Order of Operations and Whole Numbers.
We will have long division with two divisors left to cover, then we will review and have our unit test. We will then start Unit 2: Decimal Theory. By the end of this unit students will be able to:
· understand decimal place value
· compare decimals
· order, add, subtract one, two, and three digit decimals.
· compare decimals and express their relationship using the symbols, >,<, or =.
· determine relationship between quantities algebraically
· use decimals to solve problems
Seminars
Seminars are designed give remediation and extension to meet the needs of the individual students in the fifth grade. Seminars will take place every Thursday morning, giving students two chances to work in small groups to accomplish specific goals. They will be working with specialists and all 5th grade teachers to learn about the following topics
· Shakespeare
· Dance
· Debate
· Math
· Film
· Design thinking
· Technology
· Poetry
· Fluency
· Decoding
Social Studies:
*We’ve Begun GALLEON! This simulation activity is giving the class first hand knowledge of what it was like to be an explorer sailing the unchartered waters in search of the 3 G’s. (God, Gold, Glory)
We will also be learning about The Fight for a Continent by answering following Big Questions:
Why did European nations and American Indians compete in North America?
How did colonies and American Indians cooperate?
What major conflicts did this European colonists and American Indians have?
How were American Indians forced off their land?
What conflicts occurred amongst American Indians?
Who were the leaders in the struggle for American Indian lands?
Walker Creek Parent Information Meeting!
There will be a Walker Creek Parent Information Meeting in the Staff Development Room from 7:30am - 8:30am on Tuesday, Oct. 28th. Please plan on attending this meeting if you have questions about Walker Creek and wish to learn more about this wonderful 5th grade experience! Teachers will be there to introduce camp to you and answer questions.
Cabin Leaders Needed!
Calling all able-bodied parents! We are now officially asking for cabin leaders. We go to Walker Creek Outdoor School from Tuesday, January 20th - Friday, January 23rd. We need male and female cabin leaders to spend 4 incredibly rewarding days with our Bel Aire 5th graders. If you would like to learn more about what this entails, please attend the above meeting, or email me.
