Language Arts:
It’s all about GRAMMAR and PUNCTUATION this week! Students have been reviewing proper punctuation and grammar in their everyday writing. We drafted an ‘ABC’s of grammar’ poster for the class to use as a reference. Ask your child what the ABC’s of grammar is all about.
We have also been reinforcing the importance of answering questions with complete sentences.
Students continued to read our class novel, Island of the Blue Dolphins. Thank you to Ms. Gilligan, Ms. O’Donnell, Ms. Bressie and Ms. McIntosh for helping out with book clubs!
POETRY: We are learning about and reading different types of poetry. Students will ultimately memorize a poem to share with the class. If you have a special or favorite poem, please share it with your child so s/he can share it with us! Thank you.
Math
Students completed the unit on addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers. The class worked hard and did a great job on the assessment! (Final tests are in the Friday folder.)
Our current unit continues with the skills learned in our addition of fractions unit, and extends it to multiplication of fractions. I am so impressed with the way in which the students are helping each other answer number sentence/questions with pictures and drawings. You child has mastered drawing the ‘model’ of fractional parts. Ask your child to show you how this is done!
Social Studies
It’s all about the California missions! Students have learned all about this Spanish institution, and how/why it began. This week we went to Cline Winery (Original site of the 21st mission!) and saw scaled models of each of the 21 missions. (See photos on class website.)
We are beginning to reap the benefits of writing letters to our missions. Ask your child if s/he has gotten a letter back!
Students are learning how to take notes in their mission notebook, and how to use an outline to guide the information they are gathering. Ask your child about the interesting facts s/he discovered about his/her mission!
Science
Students continued to learn about rocks and minerals with Dr. Artis. This week students experimented with mock rocks, and segregated the minerals from the matter. Ask your child what s/he learned from this experiment!
Miscellaneous:
*****QUART MILK CARTONS NEEDED! We need at least 50 quart sized containers for our mission building. (We have a grand total of 1 as of now.) Thank you to all who have brought in materials!
*Our next field trip will be on February 26th. We will be touring Mission Dolores in San Francisco, and enjoying a picnic at Dolores Park if the weather is nice.
